Vietnam Sites: Suggestions from Kym

My friend Kym travels to and from Vietnam annually and she provided wonderful suggestions.

When you come and visit me, please bring $100 worth of crisp $2 bills.

If you're at Ba Na you should stay at the Ba Na resort there on the Ba Na Mountain (http://www.banahills.com.vn/trang-chu/language/vi-VN/index.aspx).  It's really close to California weather as you can get.  I went site seeing there and there's a famous temple called Chua Linh Ung.  It's beautiful overlooking the Ocean.  If you're still there April 30,2013, there's a huge international fireworks competition where countries around the world come to Da Nang to compete.  We were lucky enough to have family in Da Nang as well and we were able to attend the firework competition.  It was absolutely amazing.

Here are the places I visited and loved:
  • Da Nang (Ba Na Hill, Chua Linh Ung)
  • Nha Trang (Vin Pearl Resort) Expensive considering VN$$ includes 3 buffet meals a day
  • Ninh Hoa (I went here for the Nem Nuong but you can find Nem Nuong that is better in Nha Trang)
  • Hue - Ha Long Bay (Very far north but great culture and food, the Bay/ lagoon is very polluted but the surrounding mountains are still breathtaking.  You have to get their Banh Uoc with Thit here)
  • Hanoi - This is probably my favorite of all.  They have beautiful scenery, culture and food.  It's a long trip. I would recommend flying from the south to the north.
By the way, they love crisp two dollar bills.  Those things are like gold to them. Especially during Vietnamese New Year, If you trade in $1 it is roughly $20,000 but if you have crisp $2 bills and trade it in during new years you get $38,000 (almost double).
People don't tip.   Tipping is calling (Thien Bo) and it's very rare.  Make sure you're not carrying too much cash in your pocket or wear too much jewlery in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), there are a ton of pick pocketers that look like high class business men.  It's weird.
